An elegant cube-shaped shelf, as if crafted in a joiner’s workshop yet also evoking Minimal Art, forms a multi-faceted, cubist-inspired structure that tricks the eye: the perfect trompe-l’œil. Through abstraction, the Stuttgart-based sculptor Robert Steng creates an entirely new visual language whilst simultaneously allowing the viewer to form their own perspective on the object. In addition to form, the artist requires another component: the surface. The traces of life in the wood – its specific character, texture, grain, cracks, yellowing, stains, peculiarities and water marks – enrich the form and open up an inexhaustible variety of spatial and artistic possibilities and interpretations. In ever-changing constellations, they constantly generate new tensions between form and illusion, between volume and deception, between imaginary space and non-space, between solid and hollow, inside and outside.
