Sami Lukkarinen & Wolfgang Kessler – Portraits
From Friday, November 15th until Saturday, December 16th 2024
Wolfgang Kessler, Königin (1); 2024, oil on linen, 180 x 130 cm
Sami Lukkarinen, Vincent, 2024, oil on plywood, 90 x 70 cm
The digital age shapes our image of humanity – razor-sharp on smartphones, blurred in pixelated profile pictures. Since 2003, the finnish painter Sami Lukkarinen has used the pixel as an artistic device, translating social media portraits of strangers and celebrities into painterly, textured grids. His palette knife technique transforms digital finds from the internet into vibrant, finely tuned color fields. One is almost tempted to count how many different color nuances he has blended.
In contrast, Wolfgang Kessler portrays the generation of digital natives. His daughter Theresa appears in his super-realistic oil paintings as an allegory of a child discovering identity and what it means to be human. Captured in vivid light-and-shadow scenes, the child holds viewers in a space of curiosity and contemplation.
Both artists shed light on contemporary themes, each in their own way, examining the protection of privacy and the performance of self.
You are cordially invited to the vernissage at November 15th 2024, from 5 – 7 pm.
